City landscapes throughout the world are undergoing enormous changes. Planners and policy makers will face huge challenges as urban populations grow, and agricultural land at the periphery of the cities is overrun by development. As cities increase in size, so will their demands for water and food. The way we currently use water and land near cities will have serious consequences for the lifestyle, environment and well-being of urban communities. A balance needs to be struck. More and more attention is now being focussed on peri-urban areas; zones of transition from rural to urban land. In these vital fringe zones agricultural land is being lost, water runoff is increasing, and water quality declining. It is therefore vital that we better understand these challenges and develop suitable strategies and practices to cope with current and future pressures.
Critical research questions:
- Are the right policies and institutions in place to sustain cities in the future?
- If current trends in land use change, population increase and water demand continue, where will cities get their water and food?
- Has there been proper long-term thinking to ensure a secure future for generations ahead?
- Are there ways to adapt the cities and land uses so that they remain both economically viable and pleasant to live in?
Workshop objectives
- Generate awareness about the issues and challenges of rapidly changing boundaries between urban and peri-urban landscapes and their implications for future liveability, water and food security;
- Facilitate a dialogue among the diverse and competing stakeholders (government agencies, NGOs and research organisations) to assess the competition, conflicts and possible ways forward;
- To assess the socio-ecological attributes and identify key drivers and challenges in the urban and pen-urban transition zones with special reference to water and food security and overall liveability of cities; and
- Collect the evidence base for the need to develop suitable policies that will support balanced urban growth.
Call for Papers
Research papers are invited from academics, policy makers, researchers and NGOs in the following areas:
- Management of the peri-urban water cycle to satisfy multiple water demands and increasing reliance on alternative water sources such as effluent recycling, rainwater harvesting and desalination;
- Land use planning to harmonize the coexistence of agriculture, urban and other land uses;
- The changing agricultural landscape of peri-urban areas, urban encroachment and potential of urban agriculture;
- The implications of peri-urban transformation for energy consumption and greenhouse gas generation;
- Strategies to enhance the coexistence of agriculture, peri-urban and urban landscapes and their liveability
